Feature: Rivmixx Supports

The trouble - or benefit, depending on your stance - with Rivmixx's taste is that we're so damn varied. Just call us the musical spice purveyors! We've picked up on acts like Speech Debelle  way before her Mercury win, Florence and the Machine  before their Brit award, and Bashy before well, he'll get there this year, we're sure!

The thing with Rivmixx though, is that we don't give a damn about other magazines and their hype machines, NME darlings, and so on. What we care about is if the music gets us going. And Rivmixx is gonna do its best to give that music support - coz we rate 'em, regardless of their label, monetary backing or buzz. They're going in coz they're getting us going. Nuff said!

Carl Carni

Rivmixx picked up on this talented MC early on in his commercial ascent. We started pitching for this dude back in June when we first mentioned him in our hot new acts section, Rivmixx Rated.
Since then we've followed him practically every step of the way (no stalker!). We've proudly looked on as his debut single, 'On 2 Me', hit the MTV Base chart and made their 'Best of 2009' playlist. Late last year we also headed down to the video shoot for his follow up single 'Boasy Pose',  which we're sure will make further impact when it's released in the coming months. Carni mixes a super-polished image with a raw and gravely South London tone. He's also got this kind of screwface-inducing flow  - the type that's usually only reserved for the sickest of basslines.

Lung

Back in December Rivmixx heard about Lung 'Afterlife' - his debut single under Kokeshi - and we all went rather mental over it. Back then, we couldn't unearth much about this bass driven enigma, and to be honest we still can't. So for now the music will have to speak for itself, but rest assured we will be spending every spare minute seeking out interview time with this young, Welsh dupstepping mystery. His label, Kokeshi, better prepare for many emails and phone calls coming their way!

Crystal Fighters

Remember when Rivmixx told you about the launch for Crystal Fighters' mental single, 'I Love London' back in November?  Well, it still sounds amazing now. It wasn't just the single's title that endeared us to this crazy Kitsune-signed Spanish bunch. Apparently - according to their Facebook - Crystal Fighters "make fast dance music with Basque instruments, synthesizers and [their] voices"; genius! The energetic and uplifting tracks we heard back in November were enough to get us hooked. Catch us shocking out to Crystal Fighters' brand of ravey folktronica on a London Street near you, a la the 'I Love London' video.

Kate Tempest

Kate Tempest blew our minds back in November. While she is more spoken word than music, we are all enthralled by her descriptive and passionate lyrics. Radio 1, Glastonbury and Secret Garden Party are just a few of the high profile platforms that support Tempest. And Rivmixx is particularly excited that this huge female talent and her band, Sound of Rum, will be supporting the sublime Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip tour in March. The band have a debut album coming out soon, in fact, on Rob da Bank's Sunday Best label.

Swindle

A week after opening our virtual door to the public, Rivmixx profiled Swindle as an upcoming grime producer . Back then he was working with the likes of Chipmunk and Professor Green. Last year (2009), however, we watched as this producer extraordinaire effortlessly reposition his sound. Swindle's latest beats have morphed from a soulful grime vibe to more of a UK funky sound - or as Swindle himself describes it, "Swindle's signature - with a bigger bottom!" Having spent late 2009 making funky tunes with Nadia Suliman ('No More') and Cherri V ("Skool Daze' Remix), Swindle's latest instrumental track 'Airmiles' is currently going nuts in clubs all over Europe. And with EPs due this year on Planet Mu Records and Butterz label, 2010 is looking major already!

Natty

If Rivmixx wasn't in love with reggae singer/songwriter Natty before last summer's festival season, we sure were come the end. We first caught Natty live back in May 2009 at the Turning Point Festival in Camden , where the soulful roots-man played the set of the day - featuring almost the whole of his 'Man Like I' album. Despite playing reggae, Natty previously worked as a sound engineer for mainly indie rock bands and draws inspiration from varied sources, which is possibly what sets him so far apart from any of his contemporaries. After hitting the Top 40 in the UK Charts with his debut album release, Natty has been busy running live debate music events with his company Vibes and Pressure. Having been the sound of our summer 2009, Rivmixx is really hoping for a stonking second album, which is apparently due mid-2010.

Nneka

The Chase & Status remix of Nneka's track 'Heartbeat' gets rinsed out in Rivmixx towers on a daily basis, but it's the lilting vocals on her latest album that's dream-like stuff. Nneka Egbuna mixes soft haunting tones with hard messages on 'No Longer At Ease', which is actually her third album. Rivmixx was so impressed with what we'd heard, in fact, that we caught up with the songstress at the end of last year (2009), uncovering the hidden depths behind that monster single.  With the level of passion that Nneka displays we have no doubt that she could do very big things this year.

Nathan C

Having picked up Nathan C for our Rivmixx Rated section  we quickly became hooked on his electro house music. With support already in place from the likes of Pete Tong, Sasha and Fedde Le Grand, it's fair to say that, despite his young age, Nathan's production and DJ skills will continue to draw attention throughout the coming year. Heavily influenced by the diversity of Carl Cox's sound, Nathan is hoping to imitate that attribute with his coming releases.

Kidkanevil

Kidnanevil produces sounds that would fit perfectly in the post hip-hop movement growing rapidly in the USA. The British producer, however, released his first album back in 2007, but his sound has only recently found his way further into the mainstream - with his latest, third album, 'Basho Basho' - aided, no doubt, by massive support from the likes of Radio 1's Mary Anne Hobbs . This 'post hip-hop' sound has found itself developing into something of a dubstep hub in LA. But with Kidkanevil rockin' his own Tokyorkshire sounds over on these ere shores, we're sure there could be something of a following going on here soon too.
