As the music industry continues to move toward the digital platform, a band of artists have joined together to form the Featured Artists Coalition.
Radiohead, Iron Maiden and David Gilmore are a few of the initial artists to join and initiate the launch for the FAC, an artist-centred union who believe that fundamental change is needed within the industry in order to protect the artists’ interests, as they feel that the primary recording artists are responsible for “the majority of income in the music industry”.
A statement on the FAC’s website states: “We want all artists to have more control of their music and a much fairer share of the profits it generates in a digital age. We speak with one voice to help artists strike a new bargain with record companies, digital distributors and others, and are campaigning for specific changes.”
As part of their manifesto, the FAC have put into place six key demands in order to achieve “fair-play”. Within these demands they call for changes to the copyright law, increased fees for commercial use of their material, and payment more in line with the fees songwriters receive.
Other artists that have joined the Coalition include Kate Nash, Chrissie Hynde, Bryan Ferry, Jools Holland, Travis and The Verve who hope to “give the artists of today and tomorrow a strong voice in shaping the music industryof the future”.
